How We Teach Independence
ElevateAbility’s tutoring is guided by a one-of-a-kind Experiential Learning Curriculum, built specifically for adults of all abilities. It turns everyday activities — cooking, planning, shopping, cleaning — into structured lessons that build confidence and independence step by step.
Our curriculum is supervized by Jenna Spautz, M. Ed., an experienced educator and disability professional who has spent years developing practical, real-world strategies that work. Every lesson is scaffolded, measurable, and adaptable, so learners always move forward at their own pace.
Families stay engaged through our online Ability Portal, where lesson notes, progress updates, and achievements can be tracked and celebrated together.

What Families Say
Independence looks different for everyone. Hear from the parents and learners we've had the privilege of supporting.
"Now I can make some meals on my own and I feel a lot more confident doing things by myself. My tutor makes it easier because we practice together and she doesn’t make me feel bad if I mess up."
- Alex, Learner
"My daughter is smart, and has a lot of abilities, but things like organization and follow-through have always been hard for her. ElevateAbility has helped in a way that feels respectful for her age. My wife and I have noticed that she’s more independent now in managing her schedule and using her calendar.”
- Robert, Parent
"We had tried other supports before, but so much of it felt like people supervising instead of actually teaching our son. And as his Mom, he doesn’t want me to listen to me telling him what to do anymore. His tutor is patient, and really knows how to break things down in a way that he can understand. It’s going very well so far.”
- Maya, Parent
“The feedback I’ve heard from families has been really positive. ElevateAbility is focused on teaching practical independence, not just providing support, and I’ve seen that approach work really well for a few clients.”
- Danielle, Case Manager

Sessions are active, hands-on learning experiences—not lectures. Learners work directly with a Life Skills Tutor to practice meaningful real-world skills in the environments where those skills matter most. That might mean preparing a meal, organizing a room, navigating a store, using transportation, practicing communication skills, or building routines that support independence.
-
In-person sessions take place in the learner’s home and/or nearby community, where real-life learning can happen naturally. We also offer online life skills tutoring nationwide.
-
ElevateAbility is a teaching-based life skills program.
Caregivers and direct support professionals focus on providing support so daily life runs successfully. Our focus is different: we teach so learners can build the skills to accomplish daily activities more independently.
Our Life Skills Tutors help learners build independence through hands-on instruction and guided practice in real-life situations. The goal isn’t just getting the task done—it’s helping the learner understand the process, build confidence, and develop the skills to do more on their own over time.
-
Our Life Skills Tutors are educators who are passionate about helping individuals grow in independence. Many have experience supporting neurodiverse learners and individuals with disabilities, and all are trained in ElevateAbility’s practical, hands-on teaching approach.
-
The relationship between learner and tutor matters. If a tutor match doesn’t feel right, we’ll work with you to find a better fit. Our goal is a strong, productive partnership that supports meaningful progress.
