A Day in the Life

When Jordan’s family advocated for continued real-world learning beyond the classroom, they worked with their local school district to secure funding for a partnership with ElevateAbility. Together, we created a person-centered tutoring plan to continue building Jordan’s independence at home, at work, and in the community.

That’s where Kate comes in.

Kate isn’t a caregiver, she’s a Life Skills Tutor. Her role is to guide, coach, and teach with intention. Each visit is structured around Jordan’s long-term goals: strengthening executive functioning, gaining confidence in daily routines, and expanding his ability to navigate the world with greater autonomy.

With support from our Client Success Team, Kate arrives each day with a focused plan. A typical session might begin with Jordan heading to the local library, where he’s developing vocational skills. Kate uses tools like visual checklists, modeling, and strategic prompting—but always with the goal of fading support over time. The emphasis is on learning by doing.

After work, their focus shifts to real-life practice: shopping for ingredients, preparing meals, completing household chores, and managing a daily calendar. On a recent afternoon, Jordan followed a multi-step recipe for peach cobbler independently, then hosted family members for dinner: choosing the menu, preparing the space, and managing his time.

These moments are more than accomplishments, they’re milestones in a thoughtfully designed path toward greater independence.

“One of the most meaningful parts of our work,” a team member reflects, “is seeing those micro-breakthroughs. Like when Jordan’s mom told us he locked the hotel door on his own during a family trip, something he never did before. That moment told us the safety skills we’ve practiced are becoming instinct.”

ElevateAbility’s collaboration with the school district ensures that students like Jordan continue learning in the environments where independence truly matters. Through consistent tutoring and a focused, personalized approach, Jordan is growing into a self-directed young adult with the tools to shape his own future.
